The promise behind a button

A button makes a small promise. Download should produce a download, support should lead to support, and a sign-in link should lead to the appropriate account. Review the destination as carefully as the label. A consistent visual system cannot repair a broken next step.

Set expectations before the handoff

When an action opens a separate product website, name the product. When help comes from a particular team, say which team. People should understand where they are going before they leave the page, especially when several products share a company name.

Make review someone’s responsibility

Reliable is part of the Frameworks model. One practical expression is assigning responsibility for routine checks: contact information, product links, and pages affected by a release. The work is less visible than a redesign, but it keeps the redesign useful after its first day.
